| MTN,
SBS Africa donate PCs to new low-cost
university
SBS Africa
and
MTN
have teamed together to donate 90 PCs to CIDA (Community and Individual
Development Association) City Campus, a new higher educational institution
that was established to meet the needs of students from previously
disadvantaged communities.
The
Johannesburg-based education institution focuses on commerce, technology,
entrepreneurship and leadership development. CIDA currently has over 1 200
first and second year students enrolled in an accredited four-year
management programme - the Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
Taddy Blecher,
a director at CIDA City Campus, says: "CIDA is effectively a business
school that places a heavy emphasis on IT and the new economy. As such
technology forms a central part of our vision - from equipping students with
basic computer literacy, through to using PCs to enhance the learning in
every subject including accounts, finance, business communication and
entrepreneurship.
"Some of the
PCs will be used to form the administration and information backbone of the
institution, which will help us in our day to day operations. Applications
the PCs will be used for include decentralised student mark capturing,
analysis tools and financial management."
MTN and SBS
Africa have worked closely together on a number of other social
responsibility programmes in the past, including the provision of
development funds for the Bosmont Football Association (BFA).
SBS Africa
marketing manager Taryn Thorp says the companies chose CIDA as a beneficiary
for some of their social responsibility funds because they believe the new
institution has the potential to produce great business leaders for SA, and
to help in an economic revival.
"Educators
and business leaders around the world have hailed CIDA as a higher
educational model that has great significance for developing countries
around the world. The institution has been built to operate at very low cost
levels so that it can offer virtually free higher education to previously
disadvantaged students.
"The Campus
addresses the needs of historically disadvantaged students in SA by making
tertiary education accessible on all levels: economic; psychological;
educational; remedial and vocational. It is also the only institution in the
country that makes access to tertiary education possible for disadvantaged
students by providing full scholarships to all students for the first
year."
Airborn Assistant
Marketing Manager Charmaine Fredericks adds: "The future of
South Africa lies with the young generations. Education is the key to their
ability to contribute in a competitive, increasingly technological world.
Recognising this, MTN/Airborn has decided to contribute to empowering the
students of Cida City Campus by providing them with the necessary tools, in
this case 90 PCs. We trust that our donation will assist them to acquire the
knowledge to contribute significantly to the advancement of SA."
